Nephrotoxic Medication Associated Acute Kidney Injury

Decreasing rates of the most common serious patient harms is a strategic priority for SPS.

Nephrotoxic Medication (NTMx) Associated Acute Kidney Injury (NAKI) occurs when exposure to nephrotoxic medications contributes to decreased kidney function. Multiple studies describe the harm associated with NAKI, including increased mortality, increased ventilator days, longer lengths of stay, higher total hospital costs, and long-term harm, including increased risk of chronic kidney disease and hypertension.

SPS launched a voluntary improvement cohort to reduce unnecessary exposure to nephrotoxic medications to reduce and prevent harm from NAKI. This cohort is focused on interventions focused on reducing unnecessary exposure to nephrotoxic medications by providing clinical decision support and a daily assessment of nephrotoxic medication necessity.
