University of Rochester Medical Center - Golisano Children's Hospital Celebrates Safety Week 2026
SPS is celebrating Patient and Employee Safety Week on March 8-14! In celebration of #SPSsafetyweek2026, we’re highlighting the awesome patient and employee safety improvement work within our organizations! Next up is the University of Rochester Medical Center - Golisano Children's Hospital!
At the University of Rochester Medical Center - Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Pediatric Cardiac Care Center (PCCC) turned a rise in CLABSI events into an opportunity for meaningful, sustained improvement.
In response, an interdisciplinary team came together to strengthen central line practices and build reliability into daily care. Key interventions included weekly CVC rounds, implementation of ValGuard, StatSeal, and Prevantics, and a unit-based hand hygiene campaign — all designed to support consistent, high-quality line care.
Just as important was the team’s focus on engagement and sustainability. To keep CLABSI prevention top of mind, the unit introduced creative awareness months, such as CLABSI Candyland, along with monthly contests and games that made participation fun and inclusive. These efforts reinforced shared ownership and maintained momentum beyond the initial implementation.
As a result of these efforts, the ICU has achieved more than 580 days CLABSI-free to date, reflecting strong teamwork, reliable processes, and a deeply embedded culture of safety. As the team looks ahead, they’ve kicked off an ice cream–themed campaign (How Sweet It Is to Be CLABSI‑Free), complete with an ice cream–style countdown to the next milestone, reminding staff that celebrating success is a key part of sustaining it.
During Safety Week, we’re proud to spotlight the PCCC team’s work. Their journey demonstrates how collaboration, creativity, and consistency can turn challenges into lasting safety gains for patients and families.
