UVA Health Children's Celebrates Safety Week 2026

SPS is celebrating Patient and Employee Safety Week on March 8-14! In celebration of #SPSsafetyweek2026, we’re highlighting the awesome patient and employee safety improvement work within our organizations! Next up is UVA Health Children's!

At UVA Health Children’s, safer care is strengthened by individuals who combine expertise, initiative, and collaboration to drive continuous improvement. During SPS Safety Week, we’re proud to spotlight team members whose work—both behind the scenes and at the bedside—is making a meaningful impact.

Shannon Horton and Carol Clark play a vital role in advancing pediatric surgical quality through their dedication to data excellence. Their meticulous approach to data abstraction ensures accuracy and integrity in quarterly reports, helping surgical teams identify trends, benchmark outcomes, and uncover opportunities for improvement. Just as important, they’ve built strong partnerships with surgeons—fostering trust, shared accountability, and data‑informed decision‑making that supports better patient care.

Colin Mills

On the frontline, Colin Mills, RN, of the 7 Acute Unit, exemplifies proactive, patient‑centered nursing. By partnering with leadership to develop proactive care plans for complex patients and helping elevate IV access challenges in infants, Colin is contributing to system‑level learning and improvement. His work to support escalation data tracking is helping strengthen care for UVA Health Children’s youngest patients.

Together, these contributions reflect a shared commitment to safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
