Children's National Hospital Celebrates Safety Week 2026
SPS is celebrating Patient and Employee Safety Week on March 8-14! In celebration of #SPSsafetyweek2026, we’re highlighting the awesome patient and employee safety improvement work within our organizations! First up is Children's National Hospital!
At Children’s National Hospital, keeping staff safe is a critical part of delivering safe, high-quality care. Through the work of the Overexertion Team and Workplace Safety Committee, the organization is taking a proactive, prevention-focused approach to reducing overexertion injuries such as lifting and moving injuries, strains, and sprains.
This dedicated workstream is grounded in shared responsibility and a clear commitment to protecting staff while they care for patients. By focusing on practical solutions and frontline engagement, the team is making safety more visible, accessible, and actionable across roles.
Key improvements include strengthened safe patient handling education and resources, expanded access to lift equipment, and more consistent, thoughtful follow-up after safety events. These efforts help turn events into opportunities for learning and prevention, reinforcing a just and supportive safety culture.
Prevention is brought directly to the frontline through hands-on awareness and engagement activities that make safety real and relevant. Barriers — such as limited equipment access or training — are addressed with clear job aids, improved availability, and practical support that helps staff make the safest choice during daily work.
Engagement has grown across the organization, including stronger collaboration with Facilities and Warehouse teams, highlighting the importance of cross-functional partnership in building a safer workplace.
Together, these efforts reinforce a powerful message to employees: “Your Safety Matters, too.” During Safety Week, we’re proud to spotlight this work and the commitment of the teams helping strengthen a culture of safety for everyone.
