Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital Celebrates Safety Week 2026
SPS is celebrating Patient and Employee Safety Week on March 8-14! In celebration of #SPSsafetyweek2026, we’re highlighting the awesome patient and employee safety improvement work within our organizations! Next up is Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital!
At Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, the Hematology Oncology Inpatient Unit is strengthening bloodstream sterility by focusing on reliable CHG application standard work — and by listening closely to the people doing the work every day.
As part of the hospital’s efforts to prevent hospital-acquired infections, the team committed to improving CHG compliance for a highly vulnerable patient population. While the journey was challenging, it was driven by determination, collaboration, and a willingness to learn from frontline experience.
Rather than applying one-size-fits-all solutions, the team focused on understanding the work as done at the bedside. By listening to staff, identifying real barriers, and incorporating frontline feedback into improvement efforts, the unit was able to clarify expectations and strengthen reliability in daily practice.
The results reflect that commitment. CHG compliance improved from 45% to 81%, marking meaningful progress toward safer, more consistent care. More importantly, the work helped reinforce shared ownership and trust across the care team.
During Safety Week, we’re proud to spotlight the Hematology Oncology Inpatient Unit’s efforts. Their story highlights the power of listening, learning, and partnering with frontline teams to drive sustainable safety improvement.
